Wisconsin Tops OSU!

Ok, so it’s just a BS preseason yahoo ranking. I don’t care.

UW in Crisis?

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Come on Doyle, you need to make sure that the UW gets enough funding to keep it’s professors. It seems like a no brainer to me, but I may be biased, if you lose good teaching and research professors eventually the UW will lose its reputation as a top public university – once that starts to happen demand for enrolling at the UW will drop and so will tuition revenue, and there will also be less research money coming in. Less research money and tuition means you can’t pay people as much and all of this means less tax revenue for the state and so on.

It’s my Birthday!

Inspiration For The Team

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

Since the Badgers are a two seed and I’d love to see them do well I thought I would post a picture on the blog to motivate them. I couldn’t think of a better subject matter for a photo than the hockey team since they just won a national championship.

Go Badgers!

Monday, February 19th, 2007

I knew after the Florida/Vanderbilt game that next Saturday Sunday would be a #1 vs. #2 match-up when we played Ohio State. But I expected for Ohio State to be #1 and for my Badgers to be #2. But…

The Badgers Are Number One Baby!

Go Badgers!

OK, it’s only in the AP and Ohio State grabs the top spot in the USA Today Poll. But they’re still number one baby!

I can’t wait for next weekend! I’m going to have to give the kids some Valium so that they don’t bug the shit out of me during the game, but hell, they’ll like it.

Chris, if Ohio State wins then you’re going to be walking through every bit of code that we have at work and commenting it all. If it already has comments then you’ll add a second set of comments in Spanish just in case we decide to hire all Spaniards in the future.

Livin’ in SEC Country

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

Man, sometimes it’s tough being a Badger fan in the south. Today I wasn’t able to watch the Badgers beat Iowa because of the Tennessee – Kentucky game. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Volunteers and Kentucky is one of the country’s premier programs. Even if I wasn’t in SEC territory that would be a great match-up for TV, I completely understand why the Badgers weren’t on here and I wouldn’t expect anything different.

That being said, It’s still painful to know that my friends in California are watching the Badgers and I’m not.

Big Ten – ACC Challenge

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Well, the Badgers did their part last night, but the Big Ten is now 0 – 8 in the Big Ten – ACC Challenge. We’ve come close four out of the last seven years (ACC 5 – Big Ten 4), but we can’t seem to win. We’ll see how the rest of the night goes. We can still make this yet another year that we lose by one game.

I hope this Challenge goes on for quite some time. It’s a lot of fun to watch each year and we’re going to need close to a decade to even the score!

On Wisconsin!

Friday, August 18th, 2006

This post goes out to Jim and Harry.

Wisconsin excerpt from Wikipedia

Wisconsin has been one of the leading public universities in the United States since the beginning of the 20th century and ranks as one of the great research universities of the world. In U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of national universities in 2006, Wisconsin ranked 34th. Among U.S. universities, the University of Wisconsin is frequently listed as one of the “public Ivies”—publicly-funded universities providing a quality of education comparable to those of the Ivy League. In addition to being a highly-ranked school in education, geography, history, and sociology, the university was recently ranked the second-best college at which to earn an education degree, and the overall seventh-best public school in the United States. In the Gourman report on undergraduate programs, the University of Wisconsin was ranked the third-best public university, after the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Michigan. Additionally, it was ranked the eighth-best university in the United States for overall strength of the undergraduate programs. In 2006 the school also produced six Fulbright Scholars. According to the National Research Council there are over 70 programs at UW ranked in the top 10 nationally. In one study,[2] the University of Wisconsin was assessed as the 16th best among world universities. In a 2004 study by Bloomberg Market News, researchers found that UW tied Harvard for producing the most CEOs at Standard & Poor’s 500 companies. UW is second only to Harvard in the number of doctorates produced in the US, and leads the nation by numbers of alumni in the Peace Corps. The University is one of 60 elected members of the Association of American Universities.

Oh yeah, and one more for Big Jim

Wisconsin also holds the distinction as the nation’s number one party school, according to the 2005 Princeton Review’s annual survey and the May 2006 issue of Playboy magazine. The “work hard, play hard” mentality of Wisconsin’s student body is clearly displayed by the combination of the aforementioned academic and social life rankings.

UW Hoopla

Friday, July 21st, 2006

Some of you may have recently seen the University of Wisconsin in the news because of instructor (NOT professor) Kevin Barrett.

I think the guy is a loon. I also think that he should NOT be fired. Here’s the mainstream AP article that talks about the issue. And since I can’t state my reason for thinking that Barrett should not be fired any better than Donald Downs I’ll just point you to his article.

If you read the first article by the AP then you should read the article by Downs as well.

On a side note, I had a crazy FAR left professor in my last semester at the UW named Larry Nesper. I do remember taking his class and looking around at the other 200 or so students (about 75% of which were freshmen) and thinking that they didn’t have the necessary life experiences to realize that Professor Nesper’s views might be a bit out there compared to most people. Of course I could have been under estimating my young classmates, the UW is of course a hard school to get into.
